Festival
Shotton Community Festival was first held in the Millennium year to rekindle the community spirit that existed in the days of the old Gala Day, an annual event organised by the Miners, when Shotton Pit was in its heyday. The Festival was so popular that it has continued ever since and gives the village something to look forward to each year.
At the event, held on the first Saturday in July, we try to accommodate the whole community by having activities for all ages including a fun fair, jazz bands, local singers and bands, children’s entertainment and a variety of stalls. Community groups can use the day to promote their activities, raise funds and attract new members.
There are several competitions to enter and prizes are awarded to winners of the Arts & Crafts, Fancy Dress and Beat the Goalie.
The Festival costs in the region of £6,000 a year and, to raise funds, a dedicated band of volunteers organises various events throughout the year. These occasions are focussed on having fun and are family orientated. Past events have included Race Nights, Pantomimes, Easter Fun Days, Christmas Fairs, a Sponsored Walk and Intergenerational trips.
Many local businesses make donations towards Festival Day and Shotton Parish Council contributes £1,000 each year. In 2006, local company Metromail, sponsored the children’s tent for £500.
